Welcome to the Munich Graduate School of Economics

The Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE) offers a distinguished Ph.D. program in Economics to outstanding young and motivated researchers.


The MGSE is part of the Department of Economics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich). The department is ranked among the top 10 economic educational institutions in Europe (around the top 30 globally according to Times Higher Education and the Tilburg Ranking) and is reputed for its theoretical and empirical research in combination with relevant policy issues. Senior faculty and their research can be broadly classified into the fields depicted below. In addition, there is a very strong group of more than 20 junior faculty working in the department.

Placement Record

The MGSE has a strong placement record for its students in the academic job market (examples in the last couple of years include Oxford, Toulouse, Stockholm, Leuven, Mannheim), the governmental sector (e.g. ECB, IMF, Bank of England, Bundesbank, EU, ministries), as well as in the private sector. Comprehensive Training Concept

Doctoral students at the MGSE are provided with thorough training in advanced methods in economics. They are taken to the frontier of state-of-the-art research. Members are integrated into a stimulating research environment composed of an ambitious, excellent faculty and a large network of research institutions and facilities. The MGSE does not charge tuition fees for attending the Ph.D. program.
