Sohmen Graduate Center
Generous Donation to the LMU Economics Department for graduate education
The LMU economics faculty gratefully acknowledges the generous donation of the Sohmen foundation. The 1.5 Mio. US-Dollar donation will be used to found the Egon-Sohmen-Graduate-Center (ESGC). The ESGC will be part of the Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE) and will annually fund two full scholarships for the next 15 years. Each scholarship lasts for three years. The first two fellows have already been selected and will start their dissertation projects in October. The Egon Sohmen Fellows profit from the ESGC stipend and from the manifold environment of the MGSE. The fellows are taught state-of-the-art knowledge of theoretical and applied economics that is essential at the frontier of economic research and profit from the lively international and scientific environment at the MGSE.
The Egon-Sohmen-Foundation was founded in 1987 by Helmut Sohmen in memory of his early deceased brother Egon Sohmen (* 1930; † 1977). Egon Sohmen was a well-known Austrian economist, who played a significant part in making the case for flexible exchange rates respectable and abandoning the Bretton Woods system. The foundation promotes research in economics and wants to contribute to the debate on important public policy issues.
